The Species Survival Plan (SSP) for the Giant Panda is a conservation and management plan in which member organizations of the AZA work to further the conservation of this endangered species.

Several recent news articles have highlighted the high cost to US zoos of maintaining Giant Pandas in their collection. Loan fees for adults and fees assessed for cubs born have these institutions scrambling for ways to meet the financial terms of their loan agreements with China. Some zoos are seeking to renegotiate their loans in an attempt to ensure that their pandas will be able to remain in the US for the duration of their loan agreement and beyond.
